How to play with dolls – part 1

5 01 2009

The first of a three-part series on playing with dolls. This – and the “Marco the Electronic Engineer” series – was inspired by an article I read about managers being encouraged to play with dolls to resolve their work problems. Next thing I know, I’ve bought two “Dragon Ball” dolls, and it all came back to me… I just had to pick them up and they started talking to each other. Lynda Barry is very interesting on the subject of playing and the links between playing and the creative process, in her book “What It Is,” which I plan to review soon-ish.

New Year’s Resolutions

1 01 2009

HAPPY 2009 EVERYONE!

First of all, thank you for all your comments last year: I hope you can imagine how interesting and inspiring I found them. I’d be very grateful if you kept the feedback and comments coming, to help me on my long journey as I work out how to do this.

This year I am determined to make this blogging thing work for me, and not fall apart after six months. This means that I’m going to have to lower my already low standards somewhat. I am going to try and submit three types of post: 1) cartoons, b) doodles, c) reviews of some of the many amazing cartoons and graphic novels I have read in the last year.

I am still trying to follow the creativity rule, “quantity rather than quality,” so my intention is to post doodles and “graphic experiments” if I haven’t been able to come up with a cartoon. Below is an example of one of these, inspired by a cartoon from the comic “Whizzer and Chips” I read when I was little: “The Numskulls,” little people who live in your head and guide your every movement and decision. My version, which shows the three numskulls which I feel are dominating me at the moment, I am proud of because it was pure improvisation: I didn’t plan it or pencil it in beforehand and painted it directly in ink. I realise that you would never be able to tell that most of my cartoons are normally planned, pencilled, then inked.
